Distance Training Group
Athletes within the Team Indiana elite distance training group have full access to the Indiana University Human Performance Laboratory. Regular treadmill testing can be completed to determine VO2max, lactate threshold pace, and running economy. The laboratory also features a 10' x 20' environmental chamber, which can create conditions up to 115 degrees F and 90% humidity. This chamber can be used to test physiological responses to running in the heat, practical for the endurance athlete.
Information from these and other tests can be used to optimize and individualize training plans for maximum benefit. Testing can also be done pre- and post-altitude training, to determine how effective altitude is for the athlete, and pre-screen for potential altitude acclimatization issues. These tests are provided at no cost to the athlete.

Stephen Haas completing a treadmill test in the IU Human Performance Laboratory, prior to a 4 week altitude training camp. On return, Haas demonstrated a 7% increase in VO2max, an improvement of 12 seconds in lactate threshold pace, and a 5 to 8 beat reduction in heart rate at selected submaximal workloads.
