Training Facilities

The Team Indiana Elite distance training group utilizes the athletic facilities of Indiana University and trails within the Bloomington community.  There is no cost to the athlete to use the facilities.


Indiana University Facilities


Hayes Track (outdoor)

 

Hayes Track features a nine lane Mondo surface, an outside water jump for the steeplechase, and lights for evening workouts.  Track Records for men:
1500m - 3:37.85
3000m SC - 8:26.07
5000m - 13:44.17
10,000m - 28:51.18


Gladstein Fieldhouse (indoor)

 

Gladstein Fieldhouse features a 200m banked Mondo surface.  Workouts can be done on the banked oval, or flat with measured marks around the outside of the track.  This facility is track only and is not shared with other sports.


IU Cross Country Course

The IU Cross Country Course is an all grass facility, permanently marked and dedicated to cross country.  It is located adjacent to the 27 hole IU golf course.  The course features 5,000m of non-repeated running with challenging hills.

Mellencamp Pavilion (indoor turf)

Mellencamp Pavilion provides a soft surface indoor training venue.  Marks are in place on the turf for a 300m track, ideal for threshold based intervals on a soft surface.

 

Bloomington Community Training Facilities

Lake Griffy Trails

The Lake Griffy Nature Preserve features over 10 miles of single track and double wide trails, with significant hills mixed in.  The trail system starts within one mile of the locker room, and connects with the golf course and cross country course.  It is possible to leave the locker room and complete an 18 mile run without doubling back, with less than 4 miles on pavement.

 

Bloomington Rail Trail


The Bloomington Rail Trail is a 4.5 mile trail created from a former railroad thruway.  The trail is wide enough to run three across, is flat, and is covered with a fine pea gravel.  The excellent footing and flat ground make this trail perfect for repeat or tempo sessions.  This trail also connects to the 2.5 mile Clear Creek Trail.  The trailhead is located 4 miles from the locker room.

 

Clear Creek Trail

The Clear Creek Trail is a 2.5 mile paved trail with gravel shoulders, and is connected to the Rail Trail.  Another great trail for tempo efforts, or as an add-on to a long run on the Rail Trail.

 

McCormicks Creek State Park

This state park is located 11 miles from campus and contains over 11 miles of double wide trails, ideal for a Sunday long run. [Park map pdf]

 

Morgan-Monroe State Forest

Located 13 miles from campus, Morgan Monroe has nearly 30 miles of single track and double wide trails.  The state forest features two 10 mile loops, perfect for Sunday long runs.
