Frequently Asked Questions

Is there any cost to join the group?

There is no cost to join the group.  Equipment and travel support have been provided by Brooks.  Housing with utilities (for select athletes), and training facility access have all been provided via the support of Indiana University.

How many people are currently in the group, and how big will the group get?

For a current roster, click here.  Sponsored housing is limited to 8 athletes.  Equipment and travel funding are in place to support approximately 16 athletes.

What is provided by the group?

Currently, we can offer free shoes and equipment from Brooks, housing and utilities (for up to 8 athletes), free access to top notch training facilities, free physiological testing, and free  coaching.  Athletes are responsible for their own food and health insurance, and possibly some travel.  We also have a job support network to help provide part-time work on campus for $9-$10 / hr, if needed.

Is the group geared towards a specific event area?

At this point, the training group is open to athletes between the 1500m and the 10k.  With the abundant soft surface and hills in the Bloomington area, this group would be ideal for athletes looking to take an aerobic / volume / strength approach to training, with a focus on 5000m / 10,000m oriented work.  We also have an excellent training group for the steeplechase.

How are workouts structured?

The training group is designed to take advantage of the group training dynamic, while individualizing workouts and season training plans specific to each member of the group.  Athletes who join will be expected to train in a group environment, meeting 5-6 days per week at an appointed time with the group for training runs.

Who will design my workouts?

Your training plan will be a joint effort between you and Robert Chapman, coach of the Team Indiana Elite training group.

Is there a standard to join the group?

Male athletes wishing to join should have met the USATF 'B' standard in an event from 1500m up through the 10k in the last two years.  For women, the standard is lower, set at the NCAA D1 Regional standard.  More importantly than a qualifying time, athletes who wish to join must have a make-up which is compatible with the philosophy of the group.  Athletes should be self-motivated, but eager to train in a group environment, with a goal of making national teams and becoming successful on a national and international level.

I am married.  Can my spouse live with me in one of the university  apartments?

Yes.  University housing rules allow married couples to live together in an apartment.  Unmarried couples, however, are not permitted to live together in university housing per university rules.

How do I apply for the group?

To apply for the group, click here and request an application.  Because of the fantastic but limited resources available to us, we will be very selective in inviting members to join the group.
